SPOTLIGHTING SMART LOAD CELLS AND DIGITAL HARDWARE

The integration of internal or in-line digitizers, smart instrumentation, and IO-Link capabilities transforms sensors into active, digital devices for modern test environments. This shift alters how physical forces are quantified, transmitted, and analyzed. In our article, Intelligent Metrology Adopts Smart Load Cell Technologies, Interface
outlines the transition to digital, IoT-enabled force measurement, which addresses several long-standing pain points and highlights factors accelerating the transformation, including signal integrity, plug-and-play, and diagnostics. Read more for product information for the ILM In-Line IO-Link Amplifier, ILCB In-Line Load Cell Digitizer, and 1200 and 1201 Series Load Cell Universal or Compression-Only with Load Cell Digitizer. Gain insights into applications and complete systems, such as the SSM IO-Link System.

THE ULTRA MINIATURIZATION OF LOAD CELL TECHNOLOGY

One common challenge for product and test engineers is incorporating high-performance force measurement into limited physical space. Interface provides ultra-miniature load cells with dimensions ranging from less than half an inch to just under two inches in height or width. Interface Ultra Mini Load Cells deliver the performance of larger models while fitting into tight spaces, making them ideal for testing small components or for incorporation into devices, parts, or final products. In Understanding Ultra Miniature Load Cells, we showcase several products that fit these dimensional restrictions, along with tips, considerations, and applications. Learn how Interface’s SuperSC S-Type Miniature Load Cell and ULC Ultra Low Capacity Load Cell represent different engineering philosophies for small-envelope force measurement. While both occupy a footprint under 2 inches, they are designed for opposite ends of the force spectrum. BONUS! Tune into our InterfaceIQ Podcast episode about the marvels of our renowned Interface Mini – listen here!

6-AXIS LOAD CELLS 101

The 6-axis load cell simultaneously measures the full range of three-dimensional linear forces and their corresponding rotational moments, enabling a complete vector analysis of mechanical loading. These multi-axis sensors provide six degrees of freedom in a single, compact structural component. Interface offers 16 standard 6-axis sensor models in various forms and capacities to simultaneously measure forces along three perpendicular axes and the corresponding moments, also known as torques. Use the Interface 6-Axis
Load Cell Cheat Sheet
to learn more terms, abbreviations, and mechanical and electrical definitions for these advanced sensors.

Historically, multi-axis systems were reserved for niche laboratory environments and high-value industry projects. The shift toward autonomous systems, robotics, and data-rich digital twin analysis is finding use cases across industries, from aerospace and automotive to medical and industrial automation, as demand for more data completes the full picture of force and torque measurement. Examine the details in 6-Axis Load Cells 101. Follow our 101 Series.

TECH TALK REVIEWS THERMAL SPECS AND TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Every load cell flexure is subject to physical changes under temperature fluctuations. Because strain gages and metallic flexures are bonded to respond to thermal changes, manufacturers define performance boundaries in two thermal specifications: the Compensated Temperature Range and the Operating Temperature Range. The compensated temperature
range
is the specific temperature range within which the sensor meets its stated accuracy specifications. When operating within this specification range, the thermal effect on zero and the thermal effect on output remain within the tolerances listed in the product’s data sheet. The operating range defines the absolute environmental limits that the sensor can withstand without suffering permanent damage or catastrophic failure. Learn more about the mechanics of thermal shift: How Do Thermal Specifications Influence Sensor Selection?.

ADAPTABILITY OF LOAD WASHER LOAD CELLS

The primary advantage of the Interface Load Washer Load Cells design is the geometry for mechanical integration. These sensors with a hollow, thru-hole center can easily become an integral part of an assembly, product, or system without requiring significant redesign of existing hardware. Characterized by high stiffness and minimal deflection, these sensors provide high-accuracy measurement in a compact footprint, specifically where space is constrained and the force must be measured directly in the primary load path. They are excellent for accommodating bolts, shafts, or cables. Check out Load Washer Load Cells Versatility and Applications, and also learn more in Load Washers 101.

TESTING LAUNCH VEHICLES AND GROUND SUPPORT EQUIPMENT

High-accuracy force measurement is fundamental for rocket and launch platform evaluations, ensuring that every component, from propellant tank stringers to mobile launcher crawler bogies, performs within safety margins. In rocket structural testing, aerospace test engineers must account for axial loads, lateral shear, and bending moments from vehicle
integration through the rocket’s clearance of the tower. By providing load cell technologies with capacities of one million pounds or more, custom flexure designs for unique geometries, and calibration traceability, Interface delivers the technical certainty needed for structural and operational validation testing of various rocket and launch platform types. Learn more in Structural Integrity and Load Verification for Rockets and Launch Platforms.
