Precision Under Pressure in Tensile Testing Applications

June 26, 2025/in Blog /by Jamie Glass

Tensile testing is crucial for understanding how materials respond under real-world stress. This fundamental mechanical test, sometimes called tension testing, demonstrates how a material reacts to stretching forces, providing key insights into its ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and modulus of elasticity. These properties are essential for accurate material selection, reliable product design, and consistent quality control across various industries.

Tensile testing involves applying a precisely controlled, increasing load to a specimen, often until it fractures. The stress-strain curve generated from this test reveals the material’s mechanical characteristics. Interface strain gage load cells are designed for demanding tensile tests, with our unmatched sensor accuracy and smart integration setting our test and measurement products apart.

Tensile Testing Applications Using Interface Test and Measurement Solutions

Interface’s precision force measurement solutions are integral to test and measurement, including diverse tensile testing applications, ensuring material integrity and product reliability across industries.

Tensile Testing for 3D Printing Material Validation

The burgeoning field of 3D printing introduces an entirely new set of material testing challenges. Ensuring the structural integrity and predictable performance of additively manufactured parts is critical. Interface recently collaborated with a test engineering team tasked with characterizing various 3D printed materials, including PLA, PETG, and ASA, by subjecting them to tensile forces until failure. They sought to precisely evaluate strength, quality, elasticity, and stiffness—properties that directly impact the viability of 3D-printed components.

Interface 1200 Standard Precision LowProfile™ Load Cell compact yet exceptionally accurate sensors seamlessly installed into the engineer’s custom test frame. The force results, captured by the load cell, were then precisely synced through Interface’s INF-USB3 Universal Serial Bus Single Channel PC Interface Module, providing a comprehensive and reliable data stream. This real-world application highlights Interface’s ability to provide tailored solutions for emerging manufacturing technologies, offering the critical data needed to validate and advance 3D printed materials. Read more about this material testing application solution here. Read Tensile Testing For 3D Materials.

Tensile Testing for Medical Devices

Tensile testing for medical device design and material selection often includes measurements of Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS), Yield Strength, Elongation, and Modulus of Elasticity for components requiring specific flexibility or rigidity. Additionally, data from these tensile properties helps predict Fatigue Life, essential for understanding a material’s resistance to repeated loading cycles, especially for implantable devices.

A medical device manufacturer was developing a new biodegradable vascular stent designed to provide mechanical support to a vessel after angioplasty and to degrade safely over time. A critical challenge was ensuring the stent’s raw polymer material had consistent tensile properties to prevent premature failure or inadequate radial support after implantation, while minimizing material use for eventual degradation.

The researchers incorporated Interface’s high-accuracy force measurement solutions into their material characterization process. They selected the Interface 1800 Platinum Standard LowProfile™ Load Cell for its exceptional precision (up to 0.005% nonlinearity) and compact size, making it ideal for the low force ranges and small specimens involved. This load cell was mounted on a micro-tensile testing machine, equipped with specialized grips for testing delicate polymer fibers. The Interface INF-USB3 Universal Serial Bus Single Channel PC Interface Module ensured smooth data collection and analysis.

 Tensile Testing for Aircraft Components

In the unforgiving environment of aerospace, material failure is not an option. Interface LowProfile load cells are indispensable in ensuring the safety and reliability of every aircraft component. They are integrated directly into specialized testing rigs to conduct rigorous tensile tests on crucial materials such as advanced alloys, composites, and fasteners.

These aircraft tensile tests go beyond simple strength, meticulously evaluating mechanical properties like tensile strength, flexibility, and fatigue resistance under conditions mimicking extreme flight scenarios. Interface’s unfaltering accuracy underpins the ability to perform such precise tensile testing, which is fundamental for designing and manufacturing aircraft parts that can withstand the most demanding conditions and guarantee passenger safety.

Tensile Testing Advances Quality Control in Automotive Manufacturing

The automotive sector relies heavily on robust quality control to ensure the safety and longevity of its vehicles. Interface low-profile load cells are vital tools in this process, actively used in tensile testing to assess the strength and durability of materials within critical vehicle components. Every material undergoes rigorous testing from suspension systems to engine parts and safety features.

By subjecting these materials to controlled tensile forces, automotive manufacturers, powered by Interface’s precise measurements, can proactively identify defects, accurately measure yield strength, and confirm that components meet stringent safety and performance standards. This unwavering commitment to accurate tensile testing with interface load cells is the bedrock for producing reliable and safe consumer vehicles worldwide.

Material Testing in Robotic Production Lines

Modern industrial automation demands speed and unwavering quality. Interface LowProfile and Mini Load Cells are seamlessly integrated into robotic production lines, serving as the sensory core for automated material testing applications. These compact yet powerful load cells validate the quality of materials used across various industries, including construction, consumer goods, and electronics.

Materials are subjected to tensile testing in these automated environments to verify their mechanical properties, such as tensile strength and elasticity. They want to measure tensile strength, yield strength, and yield stress. Interface load cells enable real-time monitoring of material behavior, ensuring that only materials meeting precise production criteria are utilized. This commitment to accurate, real-time measurement significantly enhances the overall quality of products and minimizes waste in highly automated manufacturing environments.

Fabric Tensile Force Testing

A customer wishes to perform a tensile force test on various samples and materials until they fail. Materials include plastic, steel, and woven fabric. Interface’s 1200 WTS Wireless Standard Precision LowProfile™ Load Cell is mounted in the customer’s test frame. Different samples are tested, and force data is collected. The tensile test results were captured by the load cell and 9812 Panel Mount Display for Single mV/V Transducer, which can be utilized by multiple receivers such as displays, handheld readers, analog outputs, relay modules, and computer interfaces. Receivers support standard industrial power supplies and are available in robust IP-rated enclosures with internal antennas optimized to give outstanding coverage.
